Quantum computing is moving from promise to demonstrated capability, and the real question is who builds chips with enough qubits to unlock transformative value. Trapped ions lead the field on the metrics that matter, but every system built to date arranges ions in a single line, an architecture that breaks down beyond 30–50 ions. Moving to 2D grids is the field's defining scaling challenge, and no incumbent has cracked it.
ZuriQ built a natively 2D architecture from the ground up. By miniaturising Penning traps, it holds individually trapped ions in a true 2D grid, levitating above the chip's surface, unlocking greater qubit density and more efficient error correction. The chips are CMOS-compatible: Infineon has already fabricated multiple working iterations. In 18 months, the team has gone from an empty lab to a functional 3x3 qubit prototype.
